The first two weeks of this unit were been spent reading and singing (and acting out) about different number stories.

Next, the children started to think about how they could create their own number stories. Finally, the children began the process of writing their own number stories!
This required them to think about several things. What would their story be about? Dragons...
pumpkins...
monster trucks... the possibilities were endless!
Next, children decided if the the story start with a large number and get smaller, or start with a small number and get larger.
Once all of these factors had been determined, it was time to get to work drawing the pictures that would illustrate the stories.
After drawing the pictures and adding color to them, it was time to think about the words that would go on each page.
Obviously, this is one of the most challenging parts of creating a number story--having to write the words. Many of the Sky and Trees children were worried about how they would do this. So both classes read a book about someone with a similar problem of wanting to write a story but not knowing how to write the words.
The children discovered that even if they are only writing the letters that they know, or even making marks or shapes on the page, these are still things that help to tell the story!
As you can see, the publishing process takes quite some time. Some of the Sky and Trees students have finished up their first number stories, and have started to share them with their classmates during planning meetings.
