Sky Class Has Gone Robot Crazy!

The Sky Class has gone robot crazy!

It all started one, bright sunny day during Rhymes and Chants. The children really enjoyed singing the Grey Squirrel song, changing the types of squirrels (baby squirrel, mama squirrel, grandma squirrel, etc.). The favorite by far was being Robot Squirrel. This sparked the children to wonder... 

What is a robot like? 

And that's when the fun began...

Jayden made up a song that we all sing called 
I'm Gonna Build a Robot. It goes like this...

I'm gonna build a robot.
He's gonna be
My best friend. 

I'm gonna build a robot.

He's gonna be

My best friend. 

The children then watched a robot talk to a child and considered the question: what is a robot like?




They decided to build their own and made a list of materials they would need:

They drew what they thought robots looked like...

then build some out of blocks...

and created worlds for robots

then explored how gears can make things move...

and wrote code to direct a partner 

(who was pretending to be a robot) to move.

(Sometimes the robot got stuck when they forgot to put an arrow or a go sign. Sometimes the robot didn't stop because there was no stop sign!)

They also wrote codes for mini-robots.

The children wondered what shapes and forms robots could take. Do they always have to have rectangles and squares?

So... as a class we read books 

about robotics to find out more.

They even made robots on a rainy day!

Middle School Student Interns

The children have also enjoyed playing with two Mustard Seed Middle School students who join us during Park and activity times. They will be with us for the rest of this month.
